Head of Underground Mining, Rio Tinto
Dr Craig Stegman is head of Underground Mining and the Underground Centre of Excellence (UG CoE) at Rio Tinto, leading the Rio Tinto’s approach to managing major underground mining hazards and creating differentiating and sustaining value from the Group’s underground assets. Craig is the joint leader of Rio Tinto’s Group Technical function, which supports Rio Tinto’s management of major technical risk by establishing risk control frameworks based upon Group standards and procedures, technical capability and technology.
Craig is a member of both the Safety, Technical and Projects and Copper Senior Leadership Teams and is actively engaged in the leadership and governance of Rio Tinto’s major underground mining projects at Oyu Tolgoi, Resolution and Kennecott, including chairing technical assurance committees.
Previously, Craig was Vice President Technical for Copper & Diamonds where he led and developed a multidisciplinary technical team of 300 people supporting operations, construction and studies at Kennecott, Argyle, Diavik, Grasberg, Escondida, Oyu Tolgoi and Resolution. He has also managed a series of major studies, including for Oyu Tolgoi Underground, Resolution, Kennecott Underground and La Granja.
Craig has been with Rio Tinto for more than 30 years and has worked as Chief Officer for Growth & Innovation, Copper & Coal; Managing Director for Major Projects-Copper; and Managing Director / General Manager for Northparkes Mines. Craig’s underground mining experience spans more than 25 years in operations, projects and studies.
